Impacts of Global Financial Crisis on Hrm Policies
What is the role of hr in global crisis to retain the talented employees ? http://www.edalys.fr/documents/Stakeholders%20theory.pdf http://lexicon.ft.com/Term?term=stakeholder-theory Article - 1 Employees are not the most important asset of the company but the ââ¬Å"rightâ⬠employees are. Human Resource Management (HRM) plays a strategic role in the survival of an organization. In this time of global financial crisis, Human Resource (HR) managers must not only innovate but must also act as change agents, strategists, mentors, counselors and motivators. They must adopt a people-centered model of management instead of the go-get-them approach. The latter approach will not only push down the morale of your employees but it will also shove yourâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦But all of these discussions were overshadowed with a deeper discussion on HRââ¬â¢strue role in meeting business needs today. HR and Talent leaders seem to be feeling that they are facing a proverbial cross-road in how the market is defining their role in todayââ¬â¢s challenging business environment. This supposed cross-road could take HR in two different directions ââ¬â will HR continue to be a critical support function, with a focus on keeping day to day HR needs met and a ââ¬Å"call-us when you need usâ⬠approach to talent planning, recruiting, and development. This isnââ¬â¢t necessarily a bad role: an HR function running in this manner with effective and efficient processes around a clearly defined box of available services can have a major impact on an organization. They operate as an essential support function, able to provide the appropriate data to answer business questions when needed. On the other hand, is HR shifting into a role that is more anticipatory and future focused, requiring sophisticated workforce planning and forecasting capabilities, ownership of social connection and communication networks, and an ability to predict future talent opportunities. A function that informs the business direction. string(25) " God give you long life\." Joan the young warrior who created an impact on the world Joan was a brave warrior, a loving character to everyone around her. Joan of Arc is one of the many women who have created a major impact on the world; though she started very young, she followed the instructions given by God through Saint Catherine to help unite France and drive the English out. Joan, as a child, was very well disciplined. She shared a room with her three older brothers; they equally shared chores which included working in the fields, caring for animals, or cleaning the house. Her father preferred her older brothers in a way where he would always ignore Joan. Joan attended church more than an average person would. During her free time she would spend constant hours praying to God. She was a devout Christian, and true to her faith. The villagers of the town loved her, ââ¬Å"she was such a good girl that almost everyone in Domremy loved her. â⬠ââ¬âWilliamson pg. 3. Her constant praying, and attendance in the church, categorized her as the laughing stock of Joanââ¬â¢s age group. In the presence of her older brothers, and her mother she was loved. Joanââ¬â¢s Father didnââ¬â¢t favor her, because having a daughter in the family would bring higher taxes. The Friar of Domremy saw Joan enter the chapel, Notre Dame de Bermont, many times throughout the day. Joan would walk up to the altar and pray to God then recite ââ¬Å"The Lordââ¬â¢s Prayerâ⬠Joan was said to have loved the church bells so much they gave her joy. This encouraged her to praise, and pray to God more than she ever did. Joan was so close to God that the Angel St. Catherine, St. Margret, and St. Michael appeared to her when she was seven years of age. They told her to be a good girl, and to always go to church. She followed their instructions and every time that she attend church she would hear their voices speak to her. Joan contributed majorly in the time of harvest to help bring in the crop. She helped her mother with sewing, cooking, and gathering the rest of the family from the field to come home when dusk was near. Though she wanted to tell her mother about the visits from the angels, she vowed never to tell anyone in the town of Domremy. Joan at the age of sixteen acquired an important mission by God. It required her to go to the town of Chinon, where she would appoint the Dauphin, Charles VII, to be King of France. Joan traveled to a nearby town called Vaucouleurs to ask the local military captain Robert de Bradricourt for an escort to escort her to Chinon to see Charles VII. Sir Robert refused Joanââ¬â¢s request, and sent her to her uncle, Durand, who was currently living in Vaucouleurs to take Joan back to her father and ââ¬Å"box her earsâ⬠(to slap her with the palm of their hand up across her head to make her deaf for a while. Durand saw that Joan noticed that Sir Robert did not want to send her to go and see the Dauphin. Returning back to Vaucouleurs Joan asked Sir Robert for a third time. He had agreed, yet Joan already knew the answer, St. Catherine had already told her that he would finally say yes to her request. Her uncle provided her with armor, Sir Robert supplied Joan with, horses, food, and h e brought along some men to assist them if trouble were to come along the way to Chinon. On their halfway point of their journey to Chinon, they camped along side a small river. The night was cold, and the days were cool, being so close to the winter season. In the morning they awoke to the sound of horseââ¬â¢s hooves pounding on the floor. Burgundians have just raided a nearby village, and have taken some captives, along with items from the village, and money. Joan hearing the cries of the captives, she went and attacked the Burgundians even though she didnââ¬â¢t know how to fight. Sir Robert knowing took his men and fought the group of Burgundians, they killed them without suffering any loses, or injuries; sending the Captives home along with some of the stolen items they couldnââ¬â¢t return, for the Burgundians have burned their Village down as they raided it. As Joan arrived in Chinon, word had spread throughout France that a young girl would come and claim to be the Maid of Orleans, as said in prophecy. As she entered Chinon, the people started to call her the Maid of Orleans. Joan corrected them, and told them that she wasnââ¬â¢t the Maid; she was just a mere messenger from God with a mission. She came to a conclusion on her mission, where she would appoint Charles VII as King of France. All she needed to do was talk to Charles and show him the sign that God wanted him to see. Joan considered that she would need to have an audience that had to be accepted. She went to the chapel to pray to God one last time before she met Charles. Before Joan had entered the room where Charles was, he decided to put together a test for Joan to see if her God was real or not. He would place a man in royal clothing and have him sit upon the throne, while Charles wore common gentlemanââ¬â¢s clothing and hide in the crowd. Joanââ¬â¢s audience with Charles was accepted; with the test prepared they allowed her to enter the room. Upon reaching the throne she turned and walked up to Charles hidden in the crowd dressed in commoners clothing. Joan kneeled replying ââ¬Å"Gentle Dauphin, God give you long life. You read "Joan of Arc Research Paper" in category "Free Research Paper Samples" -Hall, pg. 4 The Dauphin declined being Charles, yet she says the one sitting on the throne is but a mere gentleman and that the man in front of her is Charles. She said God had shown her where Charles was located in the room. The town of Orleans was under Siege of Englan d. Its forces were so great that all hope in retaking Orleansââ¬â¢s was lost. The Dauphin was very impressed with Joan that he allowed her to face the enemy and clear a way for him to get to Rheims where he would be crowned King of France. The guards and captains scoffed at the idea that a teenage girl would be leading their army. Joan argued with the men about them saying that God wonââ¬â¢t lead them to victory against the English, yet Joan cried it is God who gives the victory, and the men are the oneââ¬â¢s who must fight. With a small band of men she traveled to Orleans, she rose against the English forces and won the battle for Orleans. She then declared herself to be commanded by her Saints that she could do anything through Godââ¬â¢s power. Before the band of men and Joan set their course for Orleans Saint Catherine instructed Joan to travel to a nearby town of Fierbois and go to the church that is located there. She followed Saint Catherineââ¬â¢s instructions and traveled to the town of Fierbois. She knelt at the altar and began to pray to God. A sword crimson and gold scabbard was given to her. Now she set her travels to raise arms at the town of Orleans, and reclaim the city. Joan entered the outskirts of the city of Orleans where she would plan a battle strategy to drive the English out, though the Lord did not want Joan to use her sword and avoid shedding blood. Following Godââ¬â¢s instructions Joan sent a letter to the English saying that they should listen to the commands that God has, and leave France. England declined the response and killed the messenger who presented the letter to them. Joan not wanting to start a battle was forced to by their reply. Many lives were lost heavily on both sides and Joan was wounded in the process, yet with her wound she still pressed on showing her courage and will to carry on through the strength of God. The battle for Orleans was won, and the town was back in Franceââ¬â¢s hands. The Dauphin Charles VII was now on his way to Rheims to be crowned as king of France. Joanââ¬â¢s victory has brought much hope to the remaining towns, and cities in territory of France along with more men to fill up Joanââ¬â¢s army. Joan had fulfilled her promises to God that she would help Charles VII become King of France. In the mid summer of July Charles VII had become King of France, and he had helped complete Joanââ¬â¢s mission. Joan stated at the day of Charlesââ¬â¢s coronation ââ¬Å"Gentle King,â⬠she cried, in a voice with broken tears, ââ¬Å"now is Godââ¬â¢s pleasure fulfilled, who willed that I should raise the siege of Orleans and lead you to Rheims to receive your consecration. Now has He shown that you are a true King, and that France belongs to you alone. â⬠-Hall pg. 9. Joan was told that she had to last a year, and from now and onward she fought like a high general, but with a great inspiration. Her next instructions were to take over Paris, yet these instructions werenââ¬â¢t from God but from Charles VII. The taking of Paris was none compared to the struggle of Orleans, but much more difficult. The English along with the Burgundians held hostile Paris. They had only one weakness and that was the fear that the Maid of Orleans would come and over take them. They knew in order to still hold Franceââ¬â¢s territory they had to remove Joan from the picture. They meet with Charles VII and held an agreement that they would give Franceââ¬â¢s capitol, Paris, back if they would hand Joan over to the English. Charles thinking of the matter of gaining Frances major city back, utterly agreed to the offer. Charles told Joan to prepare the troops and march onward to the city of Paris. Joan began to have pride in herself, and began calling herself the Maid of Orleans. She began her Journey to Paris with an army behind her along with the man who helped her begging her Journey Sir Robert Bradricourt. With the Help of God, and Her staff she claimed they will take Paris. The battle was lost and Joan was captured by the English and many of her menââ¬â¢s lives were now gone. Joan now a prisoner was forced to obey everything. The queen of Burgundy saw Joan and treated her with respect for she was the Maid of Orleans. The Queen released Joan only to go back with the Queen to give her anything that Joan would ask for. Joan only wished to go back with her army, but the queen declined telling her she wouldnââ¬â¢t return to France and that she would fight for England. Joan still a prisoner under the Queen was soon no longer in good care. The queen had died and soon Joan was taken away as a captive under France only to be treated horribly. Joan was trialed to court and charged for heresy, and witchcraft. Joan was trialed by the church. The church linked that Charles VII was in association with the devil. The trial was held in the Chapel Royal at Rouen Castle. The judgeââ¬â¢s job was to prove that Joan was a heretic by using the means of torturing her to confess her sins and return to the church. They asked her question which included ââ¬Å"what language did Joanââ¬â¢s Saints use? Were they naked? â⬠-Williamson pg. 28. Joan laughed at the idea and replied to the questions truthfully. She had told the church everything that she had been through and everything that Saint Catherine, Saint Margret, and Saint Michael had told her. The church didnââ¬â¢t believe anything that Joan said and believe it was all blasphemy and the voices that she heard of were from the devil. They told her in order to escape the penalty of death she must recant everything that she said and say it was all a lie. Cauchon one of the judgers of the trial, threated Joan by burning her arm with fire, to give a feel at what burning on the stake was like. Out of fear Joan recanted everything she had said. Being alone in her prison cell she asked God for his forgiveness, and to take her sins away. She rebuked all of her pride, which she fell on at the battle to reclaim Paris. In the process of being in prison the guards had her their way with her, she was raped, beaten, and treated horribly. She again said she un recanted and she took back what she said. On May 30 Joan was taken to the Market of the towns center and she was burned at the steak. Many of Joanââ¬â¢s army men were there hidden in disguise. Sir Robert Bradricourt wept along with other men at the sight of the one they fought along side with , and believed in was dying in front of them. Witness at the scene said her heart never burned. A statue of Joan was place in Paris forever in memory of her. With Joanââ¬â¢s life being so short, she accomplished the mission that was appointed to her. She created an impact on both England, and France. Joan proved that with God all things are possible, even for a girl at sixteen. Joanââ¬â¢s actions will forever be in History, along with all of the other great women, and men of the world. How to cite Joan of Arc Research Paper, Essays

Ends the poem Essay Example For Students
Ends the poem Essay The third stanza relates to what the women of the town, as he glides on through town. The use of the word glide in essence expresses the shortness of his trip through the town, moving on with much haste from the workers in the sawmills. As a result we can see that the speaker wishes to have no business in the town, and he seeks a quick departure. The speaker describes the houses to be wearing verandahs out of shyness, once again explaining the simple and modest existence of the town, as if the verandahs were to cover up the modest houses which lay behind them. It seems as if the women of the town lead a very boring and monotonous life where not much happens, in calendared kitchens, they hope that they hear the cry of even a lost child, as that would be far more eventful than anything that happens around there. a cry from the mill, a footstep-, the speaker suddenly stops after the footstep and moves on to nothing happens. Footsteps signifying the extent of simplicity by which the women in this sawmill town live their lives. Or a plain young wife will turn around and gaze at the mountains in wonderment, looking for a city. Murray here introduces the idea that the people of this town seek a better place. What the speaker observes in this stanza, which is the emotion and presence of the women in the town, shows us that life in these sawmill towns is far from exciting, or eventful. And in the conclusion of this stanza he portrays to us the want for the people of this town to seek escape from it, finding a better place. Come stanza 4 and the speaker starts by saying that the Evenings are very quiet; But only in the previous stanza did he explain how quiet the lives of the women actually were. Is it evening all the time for these women, in these calendared kitchens? Youd think not considering the choice of describing the kitchens as being, calendared, meaning they would have a sense of time. Even the houses are stuck in this rut of nothingness that they watch each other, so much so as a light going out in a window here has meaning. The speaker at the beginning arrived in the town driving without haste, but by stanza 4 he speeds away through the upland. It is in great contrast to that of his driving at the beginning, as if he had seen enough and it is best that he not return, speeding away. Murray goes on to describe the town how it is in the different seasons, perhaps suggesting that the driver tries to find some quality in the town by looking at it as it may be in the summer, or the winter. He ends the poem by describing the men rolling a dead match between their fingers and of them thinking of the future. The dead match may be a symbol for the town. It was once alight but it is now dead, and is left rolling between the fingers of a superior being, much like the speaker, rolling the town between his fingers. They sit there thinking of the future, and it seems that it is one which is monotonous and one where change is not imminent. Murrays poem describes vividly the journey of this man into a town unknown to him. He arrives driving without haste, but leaves speeding away. What he observes in the town is something that he is quite detached from, never leaving his vehicle, and what he witnesses is quite inferior to that of what he is used to. This poem depicts the main aspects of a sawmill town, but this through the eyes of what seems to be someone from a city area, alien to such an existence. We learn a lot about the driver through his observations, and much about his actual perception of the town itself. Much of what he describes was not actually witnessed by him, but are mere presumptions, such as the existence of the women.

Constitutional and Social Developments between 1860 and 1877 essays
Constitutional and Social Developments between 1860 and 1877 essays America went through countless changes between 1860 and 1877. During this reconstruction era following the civil war came drastic developments in the North and the South, which were now united as one nation. The power of the government was increased greatly during this reconstruction period. In addition, the social status of the blacks in America altered greatly as well. The constitutional and social developments during the time period between 1860 and 1877 mostly amounted to a revolution, but not completely. There were many constitutional developments in America that amounted close to a revolution. The Souths major decision to secede from the Union greatly impacted America during the Civil war. For instance, South Carolina took its opportunity to secede from the Union with the support of an amendment stating that the powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states (Doc A). There were 11 states total that seceded due to their disagreement with Lincoln and his beliefs. Also, the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments were added to the Constitution during this reconstruction period. These amendments fulfilled petitions started in America to grant blacks voting and civil rights (Doc C). These amendments gave blacks freedom, citizenship, and voting rights in America reverting their position in society. This was close to a revolution because slavery was finally ended and blacks were even given civil rights, which was a co mplete turn in society. However, these were just laws on paper and were not obeyed by all of society. This was a form of revolution on paper and documents, but not socially. The Force acts were also put into place to stop violent organizations against black civil rights such as the Ku Klux Klan. The government gave authority to use military force to stop these anti-black freedom movements (Doc H). These acts showed revolution a...

The understanding of modern urban life Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
The understanding of modern urban life - Essay Example Simmel underlined that "the city conspires to erase difference by assaulting the individual with an overwhelming and never-ending stream of visual stimuli" (Byram, 2002) and also that our society consists of individual interactions and this defines its identity: "While there is no perception of society until individuals begin to interact, once formed by the interaction of individuals, the society affects the individuals as an outside force" (Crow Ch., et al., 2000). Benjamin considered the modern urban experience through the development of technologies and supported communications development; he was positive about new technologies, emphasizing their liberating influences. He was positive towards such technologies as film and photography: "New media technologies such as phonographs, epic theatre, and especially film and photography, not only destroy art's 'aura' but demystifies the process of creating art, making available radical new access and roles for art in mass culture" (Bicket, 2001). Simmel and Benjamin both underlined the importance of technological development and its influence on art, culture and our understanding of social environment. Simmel's views tend towards the negative influence of urban life on individuals, while Benjamin is more positively inclined tof technological and cultural aspects of modern and post-modern urban society. _______________________________________ Link both essays in together and edit from 1100 to 600 words ie what is contained between the line above and the line at the end A utopia is an imaginary place, situated in a particular time and space, that is socially, morally, and politically ideal, and a dystopia is its exact opposite. Ideologies are as transient as fashions and can be subjective, as they are relative to the perspective employed. Hitler and his comrades had a utopia in mind when they sought to create the Thousand Year Reichbut Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals, and other victims of his vision would beg to differ (Tartar, 2004). Human rationality implies, for enlightened thinkers, an attempt to know and understand the natural world. As Norman Hampson writes, "human reason, operating by means of careful observation and checking its conclusions by further observation or experiment, could for the first time in the history of man reveal the mechanism of the natural world. "The extreme rationalism of Descartes, its traditional alternative and empiricist aspects and the debate between them, constitute the most influential part of Enlightenment in the nineteenth century. The Enlightened thinkers were generally confident that they could use rational principles to solve social interaction problems and this belief led to the Enlightened faith in social progress and the culmination of the Enlightenment ideals in a utopian society. Nietzsche opposed this Enlightened faith in progress as nave;but being unable to elude it, itwas the Enlightenment's utopianism that accompanied him through his most radical critiques (Call, 1995). A second theme involves the contradictions that necessarily exist between communality and individuality. Human consciousness is passive in accepting ideology, doctrine, orthodoxy and mass thinking and often sees reality in terms of the liturgy of certain

Lekythos Essay Example for Free
Lekythos Essay A lekythos is an ancient Greek vase made of ceramic; the plural of lekythos is lekythoi (Reference #2). It has a narrow neck, single handle, and is tall with a small, deep mouth (Reference #7). The lekythos was used as a flask, used to hold olive oil and perfumes (Reference #1), and were developed in ancient Athens during the fifth century. In Classical Athens, lekythoi were painted in white ground with figurative scenes. White ground is a form of art used by Athenians in which they created the vase, fired it, and then the lekythos was painted in white. The figures and scenes were then painted on top of the white ground. This method meant that the paintings did not last as well, but were very beautiful in their original state (Reference # 8). Lekythoi were mainly used during funerary rituals, but they were also used by Greek athletes. In ancient Greece, the athletes would practice and compete outdoors, getting themselves covered in sand and dirt. Rather than cleaning themselves at the bath-house, they would rub themselves down with olive oil from a lekythos, then scrape off the excess dirt and oil, leaving their skin soft and clean (Reference #8). The lekythoi used by athletes would be covered in depictions of scenes from Greek mythology, often including imagery of Greek goods such as Zeus and Achilles (Reference #8). The role of lekythoi in funerary rituals is made clear by their excavation from cemeteries and tombs (Reference #7). A lekythos that was meant to be used during a burial ceremony would be painted with scenes of mourning or scenes from the life of the deceased (Reference #5). These lekythoi were sometimes painted with scenes depicting Greek gods, perhaps to cast the deceased in the light of heroic warriors of history (Reference #8). Researchers have been able to put together the funeral process the Athenians went through, and have found that lekythoi played a key role in funerary rites. Firstly, a lekythos would be brought in during the preparation of the body for burial. The body would be prepared by a woman from the same household as the deceased, and it would then be anointed by the oil from the lekythos (Reference #6). Secondly, some lekythoi were filled with scented oils and perfumes and placed around the body, while others were set along the approach to the grave or placed beside the tomb (Reference #5). This was done as a part of the religious focus of the burial ceremony, and was given as an offering. Lastly, a lekythos would often be brought to the gravesite or tomb of the deceased after the burial. It was very important to ancient Greeks to visit the gravesite of loved ones quite often, and when they visited, they would bring offerings to the deceased such as fruit, a feast, or a lekythos filled with olive oil or perfume (Reference #6). In time, the Lekythos was developed into a much larger version of itself, being called ââ¬Å"Huge Lekythoiâ⬠. These were often left on top of a grave, or beside a tomb opening, almost as an ancient grave marker (Reference #7). Though they would not be inscribed with any words or the name of the deceased, they would have a painted scene depicting the deceased, some scene from their life, or a scene depicting a sport or activity the deceased greatly enjoyed. Many lekythoi have been recovered and are currently housed in museums all over the world. Though many are not in their original glory, most have been reconstructed. New lekythoi have been made in Greece and are still used today in some small Greek communities during the preparation of the body, and left by the tombstone of the deceased.

The Dangers of Genetically Modified Foods Essay examples -- GMOs, Heal
Do you ever question what is really in the food you eat? Is a piece of steak really just a piece of steak from a cowââ¬â¢s body? Is a bowl of rice really a bowl of rice grown on a farm? If you answer no to any of these questions, donââ¬â¢t feel bad youââ¬â¢re just like 90 percent of other Americans. The multibillion dollar genetically modified food industries have evolved immensely over the past two decades, and it has secretly entered our lives today. We are not aware of the damage genetically modified organism can bring, by altering the natural traits of our foods not only impact our environment but it also impacted our abilities to functions as regular humans. We are not aware because GMOs are not labeled; government regulations right now do not require the labeling of Genetically Modified products thus so, consumers are left in the dark eating foods that are potentially lethal to our body. A simple label can control the growth of this industry and promote healthy organic products. We have been hidden in the dark for many years now, how are we growing all these crops when our population is growing at an immense pace. More and more people are born into this world every day and yet our crop source doesnââ¬â¢t seem to be dwindling. There seem to be less and less famines, this is due to the increasing amount of genetically modified foods or GMOs or GE which stands for Genetically Engineered. People donââ¬â¢t understand the danger of genetically modified foods. The process of genetically modifying a product is not easy, and it goes against the natural way or growing things. Pork Barrel Essay
I am an average teenager, but I am aware of what is happening in the country. One of the big problem that our country encounters today is CORRUPTION. ââ¬Å"Pork Barrelâ⬠is the appropriation of government spending for localized projects secured solely or primarily to bring money to a representativeââ¬â¢s district. The usage originated in American English. In election campaigns, the term is used in derogatory fashion to attack opponents. The corruption in our country is passed by generation to generation. If we donââ¬â¢t act now as an living individual the next generation would still suffer, just think our childrenââ¬â¢s future if we donââ¬â¢t speak out or act out now. Yes, we do pay taxes but whenever you see the road trails and the situation of the poverty? Would you be happy? Is it worth seeing?. As we respond to the call of the times, we can say that we are all heroes. We are a nation of heroes: resilient and staunch in the face of adversity, ready to fight against the evil that is the pork barrel system. We are not only commemorating our fallen heroes ââ¬â we are all heroes in our own right, in our own little way. The real cause behind corruption is absence of a ââ¬Å"respectable justice systemâ⬠. Philippine justice is not credible, and most of the Filipino people are losing respect for it, because it cannot enforce the rule of law against prominent characters and powerful corrupt government officials. Philippine justice is ââ¬Å"POLITICALLY ADULTERATEDâ⬠which means that it is more dominated by politicians who consider themselves the superior elites of society at the expense of the rights of the common people. Itââ¬â¢s safe to say that their Glory days are long gone. When mostly the outsiders think that Philippines today is a political instability, economic struggle, crime, and corruption that often come to mind. As a Filipino citizen would you be proud to hear that? I think the answer is ââ¬Å"NOâ⬠. When political leaders lie, cheat and steal, when public offices become public curse especially in terms of graft and corruption, when public funds go to private pockets, then we begin to realize how cruel and disgrace this act have done to our country. Because the politicians, are the most notorious abusers of the law where they feel they can simply steal the bounty of the people and cannot be made accountable for their wrongful acts. A changing nation?. Maybe changing for the worse, bribery, corruption, and plundering leaders. The trouble in our country is uncontrollable corruption and greed in the highest level we can imagine, but still we love our very own country Philippines. I c ould tell itââ¬â¢s corruption has become ââ¬Å"a humanitarian crisisâ⬠and scandals increasingly to nominate the news. Thatââ¬â¢s why nowadays foreigners and citizens alike say that our country has the most corrupt leadership. The worsening action of corruption has eaten the right of every citizen to freedom, good governance, less poverty, having decent life and most of all having your dignity, purity, and clean conscience. Corruption is a serious obstacle to the social and economic status of the country. The biggest losers are the citizens or the Filipino people. In effect- the end users are made to pay for overpriced goods and services that are made with the low-quality or substandard goods and services being catered in our country. It is our right to demand real change, action and improvement from those who take our money from and spend it in our name. We have the right to stand in our own two feet for our own sake to see the real Freud. Sadly the corruption is not limited to just politicians and policemen. Everyone seems motivated by pure greed in the dog-eat-dog culture that has taken hold in the country. Letââ¬â¢s give thanks to the Philippine justice system that they can control at will. Corruption is the gravest threat in our country. Political Donations has a big part in corruption as you can see, some people the donation being given during campaign in order to gain the vote, are you one of them? I hope not. The concentration of the small group of elite families, seen in combination with political donations, gives these families with undue advantage and this had led to concerns as to their undueà influence on both Philippine politics and business life.

Major Component Agencies of the Dhs Essay
This paper will discuss what are the major component agencies of DHS and their primary functions. Major Component Agencies of the DHS Major agencies of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) are; The Directorate for National Protection and Programs, The Science and Technology Directorate, The Office of Health Affairs, The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), U. S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), The Office of Investigations, The Office of Detention and Removal Operations, The Federal Protective Service, The Office of Intelligence, The Office of Intelligence and Analysis, The Office of Operations Coordination, The Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, The Transportation Administration (TSA), The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), The Citizenship and Immigration Services, The Coast Guard, and The Secret Service. Their Primary Functions The Directorate for National Protection and Programs has five divisions that work to advance the DHSââ¬â¢s risk-reduction mission. The primary development and research arm of the department belongs to the Science and Technology Directorate. The Office of Health Affairs coordinates all medical activities to ensure appropriate preparation for the response to incidents having medical significance. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident, administers the National Flood Insurance Program, and prepares the nation for hazards. The CBP prevents terrorists and their weapons from entering the United States. They are responsible for protecting U. S. borders, while simultaneously facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel. The largest investigative arm of DHS is ICE. They are responsible for identifying and shutting down vulnerabilities both in the nationââ¬â¢s borders and in economic, infrastructure security, and transportation. The Office of Investigations investigates a wide range of international and domestic activities that violate customs laws and immigration and threatens national security. The department who is ensures the departure from the United States of all illegal aliens through the fair enforcement of the nationââ¬â¢s immigration laws is the Office of Detention and Removal Operations. The Federal Protective Service is responsible for securing, ensuring a safe environment, and policing in which federal agencies can conduct their business at more than 8,800 federal facilities nationwide. Collecting, analyzing, and disseminating strategic and tactical intelligence data belongs to the Office of Intelligence. The Office of Intelligence and Analysis is responsible for using information and intelligence from multiple sources to identify and assess current and future threats to the U. S. The responsibility for monitoring the security of the U. S. on a daily basis and coordinating activities within the department and with governors, law enforcement partners, DHS advisors, and critical infrastructure operators in all fifty states and more than fifty major urban areas nationwide falls under the Office of Operations Coordination. The Domestic Nuclear Detection Office works to enhance the nuclear detection efforts of federal, tribal, states, territorial, and local governments and the private sector and to ensure a coordinated response to such threats. This department protects the nationââ¬â¢s transportation systems. In addition, agents also inspect air carrier operations to the United States, fly air marshal missions, assess security of airports overseas, and training overseas security personnel is TSA. The FLETC provides careerââ¬âlong training to law enforcement professionals to help them fulfill their responsibilities safely and proficiently. The Citizenship and Immigration Services is responsible for the administration of immigration and naturalization adjudication functions and the establishment of immigration serviceââ¬â¢s policies and priorities. This department is also consider a military department, which protects the public, the environment, and U. S. economic interests in the nationââ¬â¢s ports, along the coast, on international waters, on its waterways, or in any maritime region as required to support national security. Finally, we have the Secret Service who protects the president and other high-level officials and investigates counterfeiting and other financial crimes, identity theft, computer fraud, including financial institution fraud, and computer-based attacks on our nationââ¬â¢s financial, banking, and telecommunications infrastructure. Final Thoughts The Department of Homeland Security was activated in January 2003 from the Homeland Security Act of 2002 to help combat terrorism after the September 11 attacks on the United States. An outline is provided of what happened when the DHS was formed. Our lives in the United States as we knew it, has forever been changed since 9-1-1. We still have a long way to go to become more aware and secure, but it is not impossible. There are still many loopholes to tackle, red tape to cut, and the lack of proper equipment and training which still needs to be addressed on a continuous basis. On March 1, 2003, the DHS absorbed the Immigration and Naturalization Service and assumed its duties. By doing this, it divided the enforcement and services functions into two separate and new agencies: ICE and Citizenship and Immigration Services. The investigative divisions and intelligence gathering units of the INS and Customs Service were merged forming Homeland Security Investigations. Additionally, the border enforcement functions of the INS, including the U.S. Border Patrol, the U.S. Customs Service, and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service were consolidated into a new agency under DHS: U.S. Customs and Border Protection (Creation of DHS, n.d.). High Noon essays
High Noon essays How are Close ups used in High Noon? Close ups are used in the film to show and create tension, to show the importance of objects and the feelings of, and to detail the characters. For example, the chair that miller was convicted in is frequently shown throughout the film. By shooting a close up of the chair it shows importance in the story of the film. Close ups of characters in the film were of the characters head. This showed expressions quite easily to the viewer. The close ups in High Noon were used to show the expressions of the characters. This was seen in the film right at the start when Millers men were riding into town and close ups were used to show the town folks fear and shock towards the three men. Close ups were also used when a montage of shots (Juxtaposition of images showing a dynamic relationship between shots) were shown across the screen as the clock counted down to Noon. These shots emphasized the importance of the object or character in the film. Objects such as the clock, the railway station, th e chair that Miller was originally convicted in were shown inn this montage and so were all the characters thats were present in the film and had an influence on Kane. An example of an extreme close up was used in this montage as well. It was when a shot of Millers three men was put on the screen. This showed them all, waiting in anticipation, for Millers noon train to arrive. What techniques are used in High Noon to show the dilemma that Will Kane faces? The Director, Fred Zinnemann, uses a series of props and prompts in the film to show the dilemma that Will Kane, the main character, faces during the film. Zinnermann uses music throughout the film to create a sense of tension for the viewer. The lyrics to the song relate to what actually happens in the movie, and when a viewer listens to them, he or she may think that Will Kane may be i...

A summary of the Chapter ââ¬ËWe Cheer Jim Up
In the chapter ââ¬ËWe Cheer Jim Up,ââ¬â¢ Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer are faced with the challenge of stealing Jim from Tomââ¬â¢s Aunt Sally Phelpââ¬â¢s plantation without being caught. The fact that they have to dig Jim out of a small, dark shack does make this task much harder for the two boys, especially since it is guarded with dogs and other African American slaves. Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer both scheme together to come up with a brilliant plan. They even lie to a slave about their relation to Jim, so to keep their actual friendship with Jim, and their plot to free him, secret. à In this chapter, Huck actually feels extremely guilty for committing a sinââ¬âstealing some-oneââ¬â¢s slave. Normally, Huck enjoys the thrill of living on the edge and engaging in unlawful activities. However, he suddenly feels very apprehensive about this act he and Tom are about to commit and even questions Tom about this. à His experience of being held hostage by his drunken father has also enabled Huck to cope and deal with difficult situations in a more mature manner than when he lived with the widow. Nevertheless, Huck is faced with a personal conflict within himself. While he desperately wants to free Jim, he is bothered by the potential consequences that he and, especially Jim, will have to face if caught. A main theme being developed in this chapter is the idea of superstition. The slave that takes Huck and Tom to the shack to see Jim talks about nothing but witches and how he is constantly pestered by their voices. Every sound he hears, he believes it is the witches returning to trouble him. This chapter also introduces one powerful symbol. One might say that the tiny shack symbolizes the bondage African American people experienced on plantation farms back in those days. The darkness and dismal conditions of the shack where Jim was chained and confound also represents the cruel treatment run-away slaves, and African slaves in general, were treated.

Third Movement Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Third Movement - Essay Example Its striking beginning, arising harmonic sequence left hanging on a high dominant seventh, aside the end in B minor, is encompassed by a "galloping" rhythm, emphasizing on the melodic line on the first and third beats of each half-measure outlines of the fifth through eighth level of a harmonic minor scale. The overall melody entrenched in the minor tonic have the contribution of the mood in this primary section being dark. More successful second theme in B major, returning twice in the movement's A B A B A form, appears moderately suddenly at the conclusion of the first eventually rising during fleet fingered runs over a left hand melody. It tumbles back to a dramatic interpretation of the main theme in both of its appearance. The third movement was written around a funeral march two years before it was finished and resulted in being the third of the four-movement cycle. Chopin was more interested in the funeral march more than any other composer and inserted the fundamentals of the funeral march into his other work of art. Both the C-minor prologue from OP.28 and the slow introduction to the F minor fantasy, op 49 are frank funeral marches. The nocturnal OP 48 no1 and OP55NO1are clearly marked by the trait of the funeral marches. The slow movement follows the scherzo in the B flat minor sonata. The sonata with a Marcia's funebre as one of its movement of funeral march was Chopin's favorite. He played it, taught it and scrutinized its configuration for his apprentice more than he did any other of Beethoven sonata. In this third movement funeral March is complete with the lento interlude in D flat major. When the Chopin's funeral march is actually played in a funeral march, only the part in B flat minor is used. This funeral march made use of in brass as described has become a popular background such as in the video games. It was also used at the state funeral of President Kennedy, funeral of soviet leaders and Chopin's funeral. Fourth movement this is the fourth movement of the four cycle movements by Chopin also referred to the finale. It is the most magnificent piece of work that Chopin ever came up with. In this movement, it involves the use of both hands, which come in parallel octaves. This can be attested by his OP28 preface in E flat minor. But the prelude monophonic line actually forms a melody with a broken chord accompaniment base, while the sonata finale consists of a zigzag flamboyant single line. The texture is not idiomatic for keyboard .It sounds more like a piece for an unaccompanied cello. Chopin was well versed with the cello repertoire. In Warsaw he was captivated by the playing of Joseph mark whom he devoted his introduction and pnonaise brilliante for cello and piano OP3. The resemblance of its nature to that of unaccompanied cello and the elaborate structure of the melodic line point to Bachs suite for solo cello as one possible source of inspiration. More particularly the preludes from bachs suites in D major for solo cello is similar pertnum mobile of four quaver triplet per bar and one of its most frequency repeated object bears s striking resemblance to the primary theme from the first movement of the Chopin's sonata. A descending hexachord between the third and fifth scale is also a very important figure in the basch preface. Hexachord in either quavers extension is one of the principal motives of the fourth movement. It also involves the improvisory monadic lines where by these parallels

Steps for Investment Strategy for Stock Market Essay - 3
Steps for Investment Strategy for Stock Market - Essay Example As the capital market is very volatile and requires very efficient and effective strategies for making investments in stock market. The stock markets are highly uncertain, and it is difficult to predict. Therefore, the chances of loss are higher without proper investment plan. This paper will attempt to present an argumentative discussion on the investment strategy for a stock market. In regard to trading strategies in the stock market, many have argued against the stock investment by claiming it as a zero-sum game as there is an equal number of winners and losers. The stock market is highly volatile and to take a winnersââ¬â¢ position is quite challenging. An efficient trading strategy can make gains in bullish as well as in the bearish market. The following figure presents volatility of the FTSE for the last forty years. The most of investors who faced great loses due to investments in the stock market are mainly caused by their lack of knowledge and lack of general awareness. In fact, many investors having very limited knowledge regarding stock investments tend to face losses from the stock market investments and their investment behavior mainly driven by behavioral finance. The investors often make the investment based on their behavior which is mainly driven by unconventional market behavior. For example, investors should buy a stock when it comes to its lower boundary and sells just before it is supposed to fall. However, generally, investors do the opposite and face losses. However, there are also certain factors that must be taken into consideration, and the entire investment should follow systematic steps.Ã

Economics Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 18
Economics - Essay Example With the demand curve shifting to the right, a new equilibrium is established. Since the supply curve is not affected in this situation, assuming all things are constant, and as there is no influences to cause it to shift to any direction, the new equilibrium price and quantity is established. The new equilibrium price and quantity is now higher than the equilibrium quantity and price before the increase in income happens. SUVs are a somehow an alternative to the midsize automobiles, therefore SUVs are related goods to midsize automobiles. This influence in the prices of related goods, which is traced back from the fewer demands, has an effect on the supply curve of midsize automobiles, therefore has an effect on equilibrium price and quantity. When the demand for SUVs decreases, that is consumers demand fewer units of it, the price of it falls. There is a significant shift in the demand curve of SUVs to the left, where the equilibrium settles at the lower price and lower quantity supplied. This fall in the price of the SUV has a significant effect on the midsize automobile market. Because midsize automobile are alternatives to SUVs, when the price of SUV falls due to lower demand, firms will shift their investment to the more profitable ones, that is, if firms are supplying SUVs and midsize automobiles, midsize automobiles will get the shift in investment. Because of this shift in investment, the midsize automobile will experience a shift in the supply curve to the right. A shift in the supply curve to the right brings the equilibrium point to a lower equilibrium price, but higher in quantity. This decrease in the price of steel means that for every automobile that a firm manufactures, the production cost for that automobile is lower. Because of the lower cost due to the price of steel, a firmââ¬â¢s production budget will enable it to produce more automobiles. Therefore, a decrease in the price of

The Passion Of The Christ Theology Religion Essay
The Passion Of The Christ Theology Religion Essay For the past 2000 years the Jewish people have been persecuted with extreme prejudice. They have been murdered for countless different reasons over the course of two millennia. The underlying reason for this hatred and racism has always been a belief that their ancestors were responsible for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This racism is literally an ongoing punishment for the supposed sins of the early Hebrews. In at least three of the gospels in the Christian bible there are differing accounts of the roles the early Jews played in the actual trial and execution of Christ. Needless to say, these passages remained controversial for as long as they have been committed to paper. There is speculation as to the validity of their claims as historical proof. A recent film about the final twelve hours of Jesus Christs life and death places these inconsistencies and the mistreatment of the modern Jews back into the spotlight. This alleged literal translation caused many contemporary Jews to cry out in protest over the hard-line depiction in Mel Gibsons new film The Passion of the Christ. Part of the reason this new film is causing so much controversy is because of Gibsons blatant reinterpretations and artistic license taken throughout the film. He tends to go out of bounds with the already tough Jewish public sentiment in regard to Christs death and creates a completely anti-Semitic work. Artistic license is acceptable when creating, but when the claim is made that the work will be a literal translation of the gospels, one looses the ability to fabricate and enters into a new realm of scrutiny. Mel took a copious amount of artistic license with this film, but he does not see it that way. In 1965, the Catholic Church via the pope in the Vatican declared, among other things, that the Jews were not responsible for the crucifixion of Christ. This declaration is formally entitled Vatican II. It exonerates the Jews and condemns all those still seeking Jewish suffering. It directly affects the Catholics, which means that Gibson and his family, who are not Catholics, are not required to abide by these new dictates. Mel, his family and a group of others called The Holy Family, have decided that their particular form of Catholicism needed to be further amended and conservatively redefined. They practice the Trinitine Mass, an extremely conservative form of Christianity based on traditional Catholicism, and they openly reject the changes of Vatican II. In short, they still hold present and past Jews responsible in particular for the death of Christ. Mels father, Hutton Gibson, stated all the popes since John XXIII are illegitimate anti-popes, the Second Vatican Council was a Masonic plot backed by Jews, and the Holocaust figure of 6 million Jews killed was an exaggeration (Schroth 2). He himself is a full-fledged member of this ultra conservative right wing theology and did nothing but illustrate their prejudiced philosophies to the media and an interested society at large. He is an accurate reflection of the ideals that helped to form the interpretations governing this film. Mels self-professed goals for this film were simple. Gibson claimed that his account would be historically truthful because it would be based on the Gospels (Schroth 3). He was unimpressed with previous attempts to depict the passion in film so he embarked on the journey of telling this story. He wanted to depict the scriptures literally and show the events the way they truly happened. Gibson funded his attempt with his own 25 million dollars and the rest was history. This is an attempt to influence his audience to believe that the sacrifice Christ made for humanity happened the way he and his Holy Family see it. By creating a flashy high-profile film he makes this subject popular and accessible to the secular world as well as the established Christian community. No matter what Gibson claimed to begin with he fell short of his publicly stated intentions. After viewing his finished product one can easily walk away with the notion that this is actually an Anti-Semitic film and not the truthful enlightenment of the Scriptures originally purported. First, because Gibson stated the film would be Scripturaly truthful one must stay alert, knowing that the film starts off on shaky ground. The bible is a huge collection of literal contradictions and potentially inaccurate historical events, the Gospels themselves, written between A.D. 70 and 100, are not reliable historical documents. They contradict one another on detailsà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦ (Schroth 3). These inconsistencies can and do become a damning problem when one begins to make claims using the bible as infallible support as Gibson does for the film. Second, people interpret the bibles same passages in many different ways. This is part of the reason that Christianity separated into so many factions at different times throughout history. It is the reason so many people believe they are acting within spiritual grace. While other Christians may think the same action would be deviating from the correct path. These differing interpretations have been a source of constant confusion for two millennia, with no end in sight. So when Gibson makes a movie based on the scripture it could contain almost anything, slanted and yet still hold validity and accuracy. However this does not mean it was the way the true events occurred in history. It means he is trying to make truth from what can be anecdotal metaphors without any real support for actual fact regardless of Scripture. Perhaps most intriguing here is that the bible is actually at odds, within itself, as to the actual culpability of the Jews. The four gospels do not agree with the role the Jews played in Jesus execution, the amount of Jews present during the entire ordeal and ultimately whether or not they are guilty at all. Gibson in his film removes all the bibles messy inconsistencies and forces the Jews to shoulder the responsibility themselves; all the while operating under the pretense that this is the most faithful rendition of Scripture yet. This is a condemnable offence by itself on Gibsons behalf. Gibsons film boasts several inconsistencies with the Bible. This is a rough point for a film, which was purported to be a truthful translation of the Scripture. If we accept the Bible as fact, as faithful Christians do, then we are instantly exposed to many small changes and artistic licensing. These new interpretations singularly may not present an offence, but collectively within the span of a two-hour film become impossible to ignore. Among the more prominent of these points in dispute with the facts as the bible presents them are the inclusion of the devil as a supporting character. He, or she in the film, does not enter even once into Christs final twelve hours at all. No matter how great Satan is as a metaphor for evil in general, he had no place here. The portrayal of Harrod as an unbelievably self-consumed man is acceptable. The problem there was removing a classic sense of blame which can be interpreted as guilt in the role he played in sending Christ to a certain death at the hands of Pilate. He became a nonentity that only slowed the progression of the story. The depiction of the irrational high courts evaluation and sentencing of Christ is not congruent with the scriptures as well. The court actually speaks words directly from scripture but acts in a way that makes them seem to be just a well-dressed addition to the radically insane Jewish mob. There is a thoroughly unbelievable Jewish mob, which defies b oth scripture in most cases and also reality throughout the entire film. With the exception of Jesus inner circle there is no scene in this film that does not feature throngs of Jews acting horribly by spitting, beating and ridiculing Christ. It losses effect after fifteen minutes and just becomes farcical. Jesus and his inner circle are not portrayed as Jews in this film. They read as something else entirely, but the truth is they were Jews and just the sign above Christs cross was not enough to show that. This subtle technique only further pushed the Jews into a corner of singular guilt. This was particularly ridiculous. The outright destruction of the throne and the Jewish temple with the high priests falling all over themselves was a blatant misrepresentation of the truth. The Bibles account only shows the sacred curtain being ripped down. Again, this is a real strike against the Jews with nothing to back it in terms of scriptural fact. Last, and very important to these minor ar guments was the extreme brutification of the criminal Barrabas. His role in the film is taken out of chronological order from the scriptures in all cases. This would seem minuscule, but it becomes profound, when in the film the Jewish mob chooses a disgusting known killer of Jews over a scourged and mutilated Jesus Christ. As opposed to how it actually takes place in scripture before the whipping. Again, all of these points are inconsistent with the Bible as a fact, and most of them are used to make the Jews look horrible, so that their sole blame can be easily established. The next and possibly most important point illustrating Mels disdain for the Jews is his treatment of the crucifixion, whipping and flogging in the film. In all four of the Gospels there is a description of the torture and execution of Jesus, but in only two of these accounts is he ever flogged. When mention of his flogging appears it is only included as an unelaborated fragment of another sentence. There is substantial doubt as to whether or not the scourging ever happened, let alone the flogging, but this is not how Gibson portrays this event. Gibson uses the bibles lack of detail as a green light to insert his own interpretations as he sees fit. He literally takes the sentence fragment from the two Gospels which mentioning a whipping, and recreates a seriously significant new transgression in Christs final trials. This newfound trial is then portrayed to be even more severe than the actual crucifixion itself, finally becoming Christs horrific true sacrifice. Gibson only had to rei nsert the Jews as the scapegoat decision makers and in the audiences eyes they would automatically take the blame for this horrifying act. This is a very subtle and true masterstroke on Gibsons part and it shows his deliberate intent completely. Gibsons doctoring of the Gospels accounts, reinterpretations of their clear passages and wholesale elaborations on their context becomes damning. It changes the movie from a literal interpretation of the Bible and creates a propaganda piece outlining one fanatical but skillful directors point of view: the Jews are not only responsible for Christs death but are guilty of an execution so brutal and a torture so heinous that it is literally unparalleled in human history. Furthermore, they should still be held accountable even now 2000 years later. Not only are these concepts ridiculous, but they became so polarized before the movie even released, that Gibson, probably realizing he had gone to far, cut out several lines from the film directly accusing the Jews of wrong doing. He knew he had crossed the line and would have an increasingly serious problem on his hands because the script pieces he removed were literal text from the Bible, not speculative fodder like many of his other treatm ents of the events. He must have truly understood that what he was doing was deplorable if he felt that cutting actual, literal text was acceptable when his goal was to make a truthful version of the Gospel in film. In order to understand how deeply Gibsons desire to defame the Jews runs, we need only examine the treatment of one of the movies main characters. Gibsons cruel intent is ironically tied to his saintly portrayal of the man Pontius Pilate. It is first important to note that all four of the Gospels are uniquely in unison on one thing: Pilate killed Jesus. Pilate made it his final decision to crucify Christ. If the whipping and scourging happened at all the way it did in the film, Pilate made that so. A small group of Jews 2000 years ago called for Christs execution, but it was Pilate who ordered it. Pilate is a monster, and he has always carried that reputation so fiercely that it is and has been common knowledge to Christians for 2000 years. It is Pilate who is responsible for Christs demise and not the Jews, but Gibson has another idea. For one very specific reason Gibson sees fit to take extreme artistic license once again with the facts as presented in the Bible and utilizes revisionist history to reinvent the monster Pilate into a good man. In his film Pilate is presented almost as a hero. He is the voice of reason and personifies logic. He is completed with a clichà © good-guy demeanor that is not at all the standard template for this dubious historical figure. Gibson plays him out in the film as a fine, moral Roman Tribune possessed of extraordinary logic and sympathy, struggling with a profound unwillingness to execute Christ amidst throngs of blood-hungry, insane Jews. Gibson manufactured Pilate into deity from an evil human being, and by doing that absolved Pilate of guilt. Pilates absolution was paramount to Gibson because it drives the nail home on the Jews. Gibson has carefully crafted many inconsistencies with the scriptures in order to create an even more terrifying version of Christs ordeals. With Pilate he removed any and all others associated with the wrongful death of Christ so that the burden would fall squarely on the Jews. There literally remains no third party to convolute the picture of now clearly established blame. Finally Gibsons grand-masterstroke can be revealed. The audiences horror with his extreme violent depictions of scourging and crucifixion will subconsciously transform into a basis of hatred against the Jews. This hatred of the character Jews in the film is probably intended to further proliferate a continuing Anti Semitic sentiment in both Christian and global Culture, perpetuating a 2000-year-old racial prejudice Gibson is an experienced master of his craft, which means that he acted deliberately. Nothing could have appeared in a film he produced, directed, financed and helped to write without his knowing and approval of every small detail. He can point no fingers here; there is nowhere to hide. All of his ugly subtleties were in the end, all to apparent to people with an open mind and an understanding of the facts as presented in the Bible. This is Gibsons true intent for this film, not historic truth based on the Gospels at all. Gibsons attempt to slander and blame the Jews either shows a profound lack of understanding or a scalding ignorance of the Christian faith on his part. He thinks he is a very devout Christian, but Christians believe in one very important thing: Jesus Christ is the Son of God and he sacrificed himself to atone for all of mans sins. Gibsons film does not reflect this ideal. He blames the Jews directly, but they could not be directly responsible at all. This shows either his inability to accept the fact, or just a simple prejudice. The Jews are not guilty because all mankind is guilty. A true follower of the teachings of Christ knows this and acts accordingly. After all, Jews helped Christ to fulfill the prophecies needed in order to die for all mankinds sin. This could serve to shed a fresh, new, and positive light on the Jews; in the end they are Gods chosen people. Gibsons extremist mincing throughout the film works against his established intentions. His interpretations are shallow and transparent. They clearly show his prejudice towards the Jewish people, and he can only come off as an ugly person in the end. Intelligent people and open-minded Christians will not be swayed by the coercive piece of propaganda that The Passion Of The Christ is. It will insult them and their intelligence. Gibsons only stroke of brilliance involved with this project was displaying that he understood the psyche of the religious-right in the US. He knew how to strike up the publicity on this film. Not only did he get the hard-core right wing Christian community to back it without question, he drummed up an overwhelming amount of raw curiosity throughout the secular world. His story, the publicity, the controversy, the disagreements, the inconsistencies, earned him notoriety, acclaim and over 300 million dollars. That money may be the only true success he earns with this film, because anyone ignorant of Christs story will not be converted by this nonsense. They will just be confused about how his portrayal of Jesus could measure up to the man so many people worship as God.

Creation of a Sense of Place in 12 Edmondstone Street Essay -- 12 Edmo
Creation of a Sense of Place in 12 Edmondstone Streetà à à à à à à à à à Malouf is very skilled in creating a sense of place in 12 Edmondstone Street. This essay examines the different techniques he uses in describing 12 Edmondstone Street and Tuscany. The section set in Brisbane is seen through the eyes of a young boy, giving the reader a very clear impression of his views about and feelings towards the house. Malouf has conveyed this by basing 12 Edmondstone Street on the idea of coming back into ordinary daily life and living out what it is that youââ¬â¢ve seen in that moment of epiphany Malouf does this through the boyââ¬â¢s views, thoughts and feelings by conveying them through images and detailed recollections of rooms and the atmosphere of these rooms. The Fernery scares me. Being taken out of the house each night and set to sleep beside it is like being put down at the edge of a rainforest. Through this, Malouf has been able to convey the fear which convey the boyââ¬â¢s fear of the Fernery. This makes the reader also feel the same sense of being put at the edge of a rainforest promoting a frightened feeling and a sense of sharing the same feelings with the boy However, the setting is not always described from the perspective of the young boy. Malouf also describes it from the perspective of an adult. Each house has its own topography, its own lore; negotiable borders...the salient features. By making the house have a topography and changing the perspective of the description, Malouf has created a sense of mystery and adventure in discovering the rooms for the first time from a childââ¬â¢s point of view. This sense is conveyed through describing the boyââ¬â¢s detailed observations and feelings when e... ...e. Ugo is shown to be a strong character who seems to be happy to be his ââ¬Ëown manââ¬â¢. The strength of Agatinaââ¬â¢s character is conveyed through words such as ââ¬Ërulesââ¬â¢ which imply power. This insight is needed for the reader to understand both the characters and the way of life to which they belong, therefore giving the reader the sense of belonging to the lives of Agatina and Ugo. When presenting ââ¬ËA Place in Tuscanyââ¬â¢ the perspective changes to that of a young man. Compared to the house in Brisbane, more use is made of the conversation and there is a more sophisticated and advanced vocabulary and knowledge of the area. This gives the reader a more adult insight into the area. à Malouf is a very ââ¬Ëpowerful writerââ¬â¢. By using a variety of techniques, Malouf has been able to show the reader his skill in evoking a sense of place and in creating memorable settings. Ã

Praising Children
Praising Children Yaren D Obando Introduction to Psychology I Praising Children The field of behaviorism has always lacked agreement and will always be a debatable subject. Nonetheless, we find ourselves in the middle of one. Whether is bad or not to praise, or frequently use positive reinforcement in our children, and its consequences of doing so or not doing so is the issue at stake here. Both perspectives, both positions, and both sides have been well represented by the authors of each article. The fact that positive reinforcement indeed strengthens all behaviors wanted will never be proved wrong, but what I intent to do in this integrative analysis is to prove the fact that praising children, and the misuse of positive reinforcement could bring negative outcomes in them. I will do so starting with a detailed summary of each one of these articles that are being looked at, followed by a complete analysis of the evidence found in each of these arguments. Lastly a complex conclusion t hat will recap the main points argued in this paper, as well as how they tie in and support the final argument.Stop Saying ââ¬Å"Good Job! â⬠In this article, the author Kohn mainly emphasizes the importance of supporting and encouraging children and he shows us ways to do it without praising them or without using positive reinforcement. He goes on to explain with evidence, direct quote, or even with personal experiences why praising children is bad, and gives us five main reasons to support his argument. Kohn explains that we as adults that praising is a way of doing something to children to get them to comply with our wishes, and that we exploit childrenââ¬â¢s dependence for our own convenience. The author gives us the alternative to have a conversation with children that we have done or failed to do instead of praising, making children become more thoughtful people. Kohn also suggests that praise may increase kidsââ¬â¢ dependence on us, and that the more we praise them the more they rely in our evaluations, our decisions about whatââ¬â¢s good or bad, rather than using their own judgment which can affect their life as they grow older. He also argues that by praising kids e are indirectly telling them how to feel. Instead of letting them take delight in their own accomplishments, to feel pride in what they have learned how to do. Kohn compares the praising to a goody, and explain that children behave well just because they are trying to get the goody, and not for the fact that and acting might be good in itself alone. Praising increases pressure in children, to keep up the good work that has gotten them the goody so far. All of this gets in the way the actual kids perform. Finally, Kohn ends his arguments with some advice, and a solid conclusion stating the fact that encouraging our children is great, we just have to watch the way or the motives for which we do it, and that maybe positive reinforcement isnââ¬â¢t so positive after all. A Bad Jo b with ââ¬Å"Good Jobâ⬠(A Response to Kohn) In this second article the authors, write a clearly response that disagrees with Kohnsââ¬â¢ argument and point out all of its weaknesses. They go on to refute in the same format every single idea that Kohn presents within his articles.Rather than purposely manipulating children for adultsââ¬â¢ convenience, praise does nothing more than encourage social graces, fine motor skills or valuable skills chosen by them in their own children. The authors go on to argue that such alternative of having a conversation with children could serve to reinforce the behavior, cause misunderstanding in the effects of certain behaviors, and also to independently generate alternative behaviors. In short, making this offered intervention alternative of minimal applicability. The authors try to refuse by mentioning the massive evidence and research done to prove that Kohnsââ¬â¢ idea of that the more we praise, the more the kids seem to need it, so we do it more is wrong. They go on to explain that too little positive reinforcement is the reason why we have poor self-esteem and poor adult outcomes, and not the fact that we frequently praise kids as Kohn suggested. On this idea, they donââ¬â¢t argue that children should take pleasure in their accomplishments, but the fact of how they should take pride in those. In fact, is positive reinforcement the primary key in which children learn to take pride in them, and how positive reinforcement it is promoting the importance of children engaging in self-evaluation. For the authors in this article the ââ¬Å"goodyâ⬠is positive child outcomes, and positive reinforcement has effectively met theses ends. Also that this reinforcement increases behaviors, not decrease as Kohn suggested. They rebute the idea that good job functions decreases the behaviors that are intended to increase, since positive reinforcement only strengthens behaviors wanted.Strain and Joseph conclude their re sponse by summarizing all of Kohnsââ¬â¢ ideas, right away refuting all of their most important contrary ideas, and giving us food for thought. A Double Take Without a doubt, it had been more than clear that positive reinforcement will always increase a favorable behavior or outcome to be repeated in the future, this is to be true whether the reason, motive or case in which is used is right or wrong.Praise in this issue could be easily being compared to the food pellet used in The Skinner Box; subjects will always strive for the reward, no matter whatââ¬â¢s at stake. Now let us not get distracted and really focused on the important issue, how does praise (positive reinforcement) affect children? Well, letââ¬â¢s look at the evidence provided. Kohn, gave us five main reasons why praising affects our kids in a negative way, on the other hand Strain and Joseph not just refuted this five reasons, but explained how it affects kids in a positive way. 1.Manipulating Children: Kohn t o prove his point within the first claim he makes, he quotes a professor at the University of Northern Iowa, which called this approach ââ¬Å"sugar-coated controlâ⬠, that get children to comply with adultsââ¬â¢ wishes. Strain and Joseph, on the other hand use common reasoning to refute Kohnsââ¬â¢ point, stating that of course it is wrong for adults to make children engage in: ââ¬Å"developmentally inappropriate and nonfunctional behaviorsâ⬠, but of course if used the right way it could encourage the repetition of positive behavior that in the long run will benefit kids. Also, Kohn mentions that it could maybe having a conversation with kids instead of praising could actually make them understand the point of doing an act. The opposition quickly replies by stating that such conversation could even cause confusion in children of young ages. 2. Creating Praise Junkies: It is not hard to understand the clear point Kohn makes in his second claim, by praising kids we make them dependent of us, and our own judgment. But he goes to extend and brings the words of a researcher at the University of Florida to support his claim. He suggested that students that are praised lavishly when answering a question right, were more tentative with their responses, or scared that they could be wrong and the teacher would disagree with them making them feel insecure. The weak rebuttal to this claim make by the opposing authors tries to incorporate nameless evidence and decades of research that prove Kohnsââ¬â¢ point to be wrong, but do not go on to named them or explain them. They tried to argue the fact that indeed is the lack of praising that causes poor self-esteem and poor adult outcomes. . Stealing a Childsââ¬â¢ Pleasure: Kohn to prove his third point he incorporates a personal experience of his daughter which clearly is guided to the audience. He explained how she wants her daughter to instead of looking up to him for a verdict on an act to share her accom plished pleasure with him. Strain and Joseph, argue back again with nameless evidence the fact that positive reinforcement is the key in which kids learn to take pride in their own actions.Even with the lack of evidence from their part, we cannot ignore that kids will always need guidance at first which makes this is a very strong point. 4. Losing Interest: oh this claim both authors of both article have a very different idea on what the own claim presents; none of them bring outside sources our measurable evidence for us to take account. 5. Reducing Achievement: Praising does indeed create pressure; itââ¬â¢s like an image that one has to keep up with. Kohn and researchers as we mentions have found that praising creates pressure, and pressure gets in the way of getting things done.Strain and Joseph end this debate by stating once again that positive reinforcement only strengthens behaviors wanted. To conclude, as we can see both sides introduce great arguments to their part. And in fact, positive reinforcement increases a desirable behavior as Strain and Joseph have been arguing. But also in fact it could also have negative outcomes not just for children, but for any subject. The most important thing we get from this is the fact for which we use positive reinforcement, our motives and how we apply it in life, and specially our kids. Positive PraisingIn conclusion, after reviewing both arguments we can clearly state the fact that positive reinforcement truly encourages a desirable behavior. We can also clearly state the fact that practicing positive reinforcement (praising) in children, could be a good or a bad, on the same account it could bring positive outcomes or negative outcomes. Children are learning sponges, and as long as guide our kids appropriately there should be no worries. As long as we understand the reason we use praising, our motives, and how we use it in our children but for their own benefit, we all will live in a better world. .

Fat Burning Myths and Aerobics
For the past twenty years, everyone followed fitness professionals, nutritionists, dieticians and aerobic instructors repeated recommendations to follow a low fat diet and attend aerobic classes twice a week. According to experts, low fat diets and aerobic exercise were the only effective way to lose weight. Rapid increase of qualified fitness professionals only accomplished teaching everyone endless ways of how not to lose weight, or which exercise habits do not work. Professionals have yet to come up with resolutions that do burn fat. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s a Factââ¬âAmericans are getting fatter. Experts suggest that 75 percent of Americans will be overweight by 2015, and 41 percent of that group will be obese. Along with our burgeoning waistlines, the business of weight loss has become huge.â⬠(Villarosa, 2007)à When aerobics for weight loss are encouraged by any professional, including medical doctors, it is assumed the only acceptable form of aerobics were organized class es through a qualified instructor. Although the only visible evidence aerobic classes and low fat diets trim waistlines are only words written on paper, people continue to be deceived into thinking they can purchase their ideal fitness levels. The market is flooded with a new fitness facility on every corner, a new diet, or new weight loss video created based on latest breakthrough research. New fitness programs based on the latest breakthrough research have been created for the past twenty five years with each new weight loss book, video or diet leading consumers farther from their fitness goals. With promises of weight loss, aerobic classes increased in popularity overnight. Falling short of the improved fitness promises, aerobic classes remain popular. The industry attract customers using fitness promises to sell their products. Knowledgeable professionals use their education to gain peoples trust. There are an abundance of fitness professionals to explain technical details of the human system, naming scientific names for every muscle in the body. Educating the public with all this physiological knowledge does not result in more fat burning during aerobic classes. When fitness programs fail to keep their promises, even with financial obligations, or the trial period to return the item has passed, the focus switches off fitness goals. Fitness myths continue because lies are always explained away. After realizing one hour aerobics class twice a week is hardly vigorous enough to shed a pound, dietary habits are blamed. After exposure of dietary myths, experts blame hereditary. à Popular fitness magazines write informative articles bringing newfound knowledge to customers explaining the cardio system and it relates to aerobics. The only people who will waste time reading article after article or listening to sales peopleââ¬â¢s lectures on human anatomy are the ones trying to tell someone the fitness advice is not delivering the promised results. People are tol d losing weight is beyond their capacity when there are no visible results from aerobic classes. With professionalââ¬â¢s enthusiasm to educate every client on scientific details of fitness, basic commonsense diet and exercise understanding is forgotten. The intensity level involving any activity determines weight loss results. It is common knowledge that excess body weight is unused calories or unused energy. Repeated muscle contraction burns up energy. The faster and more frequent the muscular contractions, more energy is consumed, muscles become fitter, stronger and more efficient. Stronger, fitter muscles move easier, allowing more calorie consumption during everyday routine activities.ââ¬Å"The energy required for muscle contraction comes from the breakdown of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a substance that is present in the cells and is formed during cellular respiration.â⬠(ââ¬Å"Muscle,â⬠2007) à In simple terms, ATP is the scientific procedures explaining how v igorous exercise or repeated rapid muscle contraction burns stored body fat. Muscles, proteins, and engaged cells break down the stored energy the same way during aerobics, power walking, rollerblading, weight training, biking, mountain climbing, running stairs, or playing basketball.Analyzing the term aerobic can give someone the misconception long term endurance exercising is essential for weight loss. Aerobic relates to oxygen or air. An aerobically fit person understandably has a healthy respiratory system. Anaerobic is the opposite of aerobic, using maximum muscular strength. ââ¬Å"Anaerobic endurance is a short-term, high intensity muscular effortââ¬âless than about two minutes; cardiovascular endurance involves muscular effort for a much longer duration.â⬠(Brzycki, 1993)à For years, experts believed a person could not exercise the muscular system and the cardio system simultaneously without sustaining serious injury or building oversized muscles.ââ¬Å"Keep in mi nd that compared to fat, muscle is very dense. Increase your muscle mass and your metabolism gets an automatic boost. Muscle weighs more than fat so it's possible to build muscle mass and gain weight but appear smaller visually because you've decreased your overall fat percentage.â⬠(Hanlon, 2007, p. 28) Adding weights to a cardio workout increases muscular contractionââ¬â¢s capacity, making the ATP breakdown more thorough. Aerobic classes, the most moderate walking program and even daily tasks such as shopping or house cleaning potentially engages higher percentage of working muscles adding ankle and wrist weights.ââ¬Å"When you exercise, your muscles burn sugar, fat or protein in the presence of oxygen to produce energy. If you exercise so intensely that you become short of breath and your muscles can't get enough oxygen, lactic acid accumulates in your muscles. à Lactic acid removes the chloride, so it is easier for potassium to get back inside cells. Therefore lactic acid increases the ratio of potassium inside cells to the amount outside, and this helps the muscle contract with more efficiency.â⬠(ââ¬Å"Study: Lactic Acid Not,â⬠2007, p. C10) Combining weight training with aerobic activity decreases the exerciserââ¬â¢s size.Cardio training can be fast weight lifting. Depending on gender, and as long as no supplements are used, the amount of weight during workout routines does not determine muscle size. People working towards a visually larger appearance lift weights very slowly, making sure to workout the muscles on the release. This is called working out the negative muscles. Either light weights or heavy weights used at a very slow speed will increase body size. Working out with heavy or light weights at aerobic pace utilizes fast twitch muscle fibers reducing body size. Anaerobic exercises or exercise strategies using fast-twitch muscle fibers are effective for fat burning.Experts never encourage vigorous exercise; it is up to the individual to experiment with effective fat burning exercises. The fitness industry, including fitness magazines, is designed for people who have very little or no previous knowledge of workouts. The term aerobic directly relating to the cardiovascular system is one of the reasons it was the only effective exercises resulting in fat loss.à High speed muscle contraction, the build up of lactic acid, the breakdown of ATP, burns up stored fat. Endurance or aerobic training takes a long time to get muscles to the point of exhaustion. Using muscles to their maximum cannot be taught in a one hour aerobic class because the weakest fitness levels must be considered when choreographing such exercise sessions.ReferencesBourne, G. H.
